So me and my guy have decided we'll be getting married either Fall 2010 or Fall 2011 and the subject of engagement rings has come up a couple times. I DON'T want a diamond one but he thinks I'm crazy. My mom and coworkers think I'm crazy too. I'd really rather have a nice peridot ring (my birthstone and one of my favorite colors), or a nice sapphire ring (they're extremely tough gems and the birthstone of the month we started dating as well as the month we're thinking about getting married in). One of my guy's arguments is that it won't match everything (since it will be color), my mom thinks that if a guy wants to buy me a diamond I should accept and not be a "brat", my coworkers think it's stupid to not like diamonds. How do I get my guy to realize how important NOT having a diamond is to me? How do I get everyone else I know to stop calling me crazy for not wanting a "traditional" diamond engagement ring?

You're not crazy! I want a sapphire too. In ancient times I believe it was the preferred stone for marriage/engagement because it means - truth love and fidelity!

I understand how you feel. My birth stone is blue sapphire and my fiance wanted to buy me a diamond. So we compromised and my grandmother wanted me to have her engagement ring so this is my ring and I totally love it!!!
