Default What kind of diamond would you prefer for an engagement ring?

I am trying to decide what to buy for my proposal without asking my girlfriend. I have narrowed it down to 3 options but would like to get some second opinions. Also, I am thinking Brilliant Round or Princess cut but suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

1. Large but not perfect (i.e. 1 or more ct E/L1)
2. Medium better quality (i.e. 0.75-0.85 ct D or E/SI1 or VS2
3. Small but close to perfect (i.e. 0.5 or less ct, D/E VVS1 or VVS2

Thanks everyone, I have decided to go with medium and find a VVS2 or VVS1. Now to go and check them out

I think it's better to get the small close to perfect one. imperfections will always irritate her, and they're much easier to see on a large diamond. I have a half carot princess cut diamond with 3 small diamonds in the band on either side. It's definitely big enough. I love it. and I get comments on it all the time.

If she likes sparkly things then go with the brilliant cut diamond because it sparkles more in the light.

You could always secretly ask her friend to see if she has mentioned what type of engagement ring she hopes she'll get one day, but you have to somehow make sure the friend doesn't spill the beans before you are ready to propose.

If you think most of the people looking at the ring will do so with an untrained eye and that your beloved wants a large ring, then go with the large but not perfect.

I like the medium, better quality because it wouldn't be too large. I would hate to have to wear a big bulky ring every day because it could get caught on everything unless you have it set in a setting that prevents this.

Small, but good quality. And also guaranteed to not be a conflict diamond.

that way it's not too large so that you can see the flaws but not too small so that her parents will think that you didn't want to spend a lot of money on it.

I would say Medium better quality - it will be better value, no obvious inclusions and would look nice, not too big and not too small. It should also be something that she is comfortable wearing every day.

As to round or princess cut . . . I will simply say that I love my princess cut!

Congrats and best wishes for a lifetime of happiness!

small but close to perfect! it does not matter if you have 8 carats of diamond ring but low quality. it is not a ring that worth to buy.

always go for the best quality - if you don't, you will regret it.. you will be able to see imperfections, especially as the diamond gets older
don't waste your money on a sh!tty diamond
