Hey -
No - they don't look too vulgar, they genrally look stunning!
All I would say is this: do not sacrifice quality for size. I opted for a smaller diamond so that I got an (almost) flawless stone and it really shows. It's a 0.50 marquise cut, D colour, VVS1 with ideal symmetry, no fluorescence and brillaint cut. Though it's not a huge rock, it looks a good size on my finger because it's a logner stone. I adore it.
However, I just didn't want a large rock. If I had, I would have waited a while longer - so if it's what you want, and you have the money - go for it girl! It's a special ring and you should get what you want!
But seriosuly, if possible, try to stick to or above F colour, VVS2 clarity and a good cut for the stone - inclusions will be more obvious the larger the stone. Also check out the dimensions. Mine is less than 1mm shorter in length than a 0.60 diamond of the same quality - but it was £800 less than that rock...and I doubt it's that obvious.
But so long as YOU are happy, that's all that matters. Anyone who bitches - tell them to sling their hook hehe.
Try bluenile.com and adiamor.com which let you search diamonds...helps get a price idea and look idea. Also, the link below is great for getting a visual of diamond sizes. These sites also give good 'diamond lessons' so you won't get ripped off.
i can personally vouch for bluenile - that's where my FH got my ring. It is valued more than it cost too!
Congrats!
