Which finger does the engagement ring go on?

I mean, I thought it went on your ring finger (the one near your pinkie on your left hand) and then the wedding ring went over it, but in Eclipse he put it on the middle finger of her left hand, I'm confused, Is that what they used to do in the 1900's when Edward grew up or something?

In parts of Europe, it goes on the right hand, ring finger and then switches to the left, and vise versa for other parts. Everyone else puts it on the left and keeps it there or removes it after being married. Do what you want.
